FAQs

Whether you’re new to NKU or have been here a while, sometimes things can be difficult to find. With that in mind, here is a list of common questions and links to answers, forms, research material, and program websites.

  • I’m not sure which classes are required for my major?

If you are looking for a list of all the required or elective classes for your major, information regarding thesis/capstone/project hours, or comprehensive exams, as well as general information on Graduate School policies and procedures, the place to find that is here:

http://gradschool.nku.edu/docs/2011-12_Grad_cataolg.pdf

  • I need to register for classes, how do I do that?

To register for classes you need to log onto myNKU using your username (the part of your NKU email before the “@”) and password. You can register for classes by clicking on academics>online registration.

The IT center also offer several tutorials here, detailing course registration and add/drop. The Schedule of Classes can be found here.

If you are attempting to register for classes but receive an error this could be for several reasons. Firstly, take a look at the top of the registration page, it should appear something like this:

  • If the first green box is red, then you are trying to sign up for classes outside of your allotted registration window. Check with your program for registration dates.
  • If the second green box is red, then you have a hold on your account. This could be due to several reasons, but it is best to contact your program director first to see why this might be the case.
  • If none of the boxes are red but you are still having problems signing up, check to see whether all prerequisites have been met or whether you need instructor permission to enter the class.
  • I need to change my address or sign up for thesis hours. Where can I find the forms?

If you are a currently enrolled student and are looking to update your information or enroll in capstone or thesis hours, information and forms can be found here: http://gradschool.nku.edu/Student_Forms.php

  • I have a part of my class online and I need to find Blackboard and MyNKU. Where are they?

The image above shows the NKU homepage (www.nku.edu).

In the upper right is a drop down menu that has links to Blackboard (learnonline.nku.edu), Calendars, Directory/Find-it, NKU Library (library.nku.edu), myNKU (mynku.nku.edu) and others. Clicking these links will take you to the desired location, where you may be required to log in using your username (the part of your NKU email before the “@”) and your password.

Final grades will also be posted on MyNKU under My Records>Grades.

  • I have a research project due for my class, but I don’t even know where to start!

Many professors will have specific databases/journals that they would prefer that you use. However, if it’s entirely up to you and you’re feeling overwhelmed and lost a great place to start is the library website at: library.nku.edu.

Above is an image of the library homepage and the drop down menu. Included in the menu are links to “articles and databases” and “research guides“. These are two of the most important links. The tutorials page has information about everything regarding library information, searches, boolean logic, and more! There is also an option to chat to a librarian or make an appointment for personalized help with research.

  • I need to set up my email and I’d like to forward it to my personal email account?

Student email accounts are created within 1 business day after admission to the University.  Campus departments like the Financial Aid, Admission, & Registrars office will send correspondence to this email account.

To find out if your account has been created and what the name of it is, visit the Account Information / Password Change website.  You will also be able to set your account password by entering the last eight (8) digits of your ISO number (found on the bottom of your NKU ID card) and the last four (4) digits of your Social Security Number. You can access your email account online at webmail.nku.edu.

Instructions for forwarding email can be found via webmail under options, along with POP, SMTP, and IMAP settings (for importing mail into a desktop client such as Outlook etc.)

  • How do I find information about Financial Aid or paying my bill?
Information about Tuition and Fees can be found here and the Office of Financial Aid can be found here (financialaid.nku.edu). In order to receive funding for graduate-level classes you must be a degree-seeking student taking no less than 4 credit-hours. You also must be fully admitted to the program (and not under provisional status).
